Surreal short film inspired by Magritte about a troubled painter trying to escape the darkness inside of himself.
This was a challenging project for me as I was just starting out, but it came together rather nicely. This set and the bedroom set were constructed in a sound stage so that we could have ultimate control over lighting and the design of the rooms. The ballroom was challenging as we had a limited number of flats, so I ended up flaring out the constructed part of the ballroom to make it feel grander while covering the rest of our angles with a thick black velvet curtain. I dropped in some sheer curtains as well to break up the room and add some depth.
The bedroom was an especially challenging build because I wanted the room to look as confined as possible, so we chose to angle the ceiling inward. In order to show the main character's inner torment and obsession with his art, I added lots of sketches and paintings, which gave the room the desired claustrophobic feeling.
